India’s Tata Steel has signed a formal cooperation agreement with Germany’s SMS Group to carry out a revolutionary technological transformation on the blast furnace of its Jamshedpur production base. The two sides will jointly build the world’s first industrial-scale electric-assisted syngas smelting furnace. This innovative technology replaces traditional coke with plasma-heated syngas for smelting work. After the transformation is completed, the carbon dioxide emissions of the furnace will be cut by more than 50% compared with traditional steelmaking equipment. The steel industry is one of the major carbon emission sectors worldwide. This new technology provides a practical and replicable decarbonization solution for numerous old steel plants. Many international steel enterprises have paid close attention to this project, hoping to learn relevant experience to achieve the industry’s long-term goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
