Ukraine Extends Scrap Export Ban Through 2026

2026-01-19 14 Font size: A- A A+

Ukraine’s government extended its zero-quota scrap export ban until the end of 2026, a strategic decision to secure raw materials for domestic steel mills amid ongoing conflict. The ban, first implemented in 2022, ensures scrap is channeled to local EAF and integrated mills, supporting both wartime industrial needs and post-conflict reconstruction. Ukraine’s scrap exports have plummeted over 60% since 2022, and the extension will further tighten global supplies—particularly impacting Turkey and Eastern European buyers who rely on Ukrainian scrap. Domestic steel output has stabilized at 15–20 million metric tons annually, down from pre-war levels of 22 million metric tons, as mills in central and western Ukraine resume partial operations.
